    Unfortunately this seems to be the case with most water suppliers. We work in 3 different water suppliers area's all are now on 'direct emergency call out to stop taps' When I asked Yorkshire water to define dire emergency they said uncontrolled leak flowing out of house door!.

    That is not cast iron! Black painted mild steel, we were still regularly using it when I started in 60s even on domestic supply's.

    Its what's known as black iron actually black painted steel pipe so angle grinder with care multitool with correct blade anything that will cut steel.

    Why fit system filter in property? Loads of room in a Grant external combi to fit filter at back of boiler. Then all serviceing outside!

    You miss my point If you have a open fire with back boiler (or a wrap round boiler Dunsley type) the boiler has to be exposed to fire to work. Thus easily accessed to drill holes in it or whatever.

    Anything is possible but by time you have identified existing valve and bought a identical valve as you won't be able to get parts just easier to swap valve.
