You discard the olive that comes with the fitting and only use the reducer yes

Out of the two options, I prefer the olive type, but they're both nasty in my opinion.
If possible I'll use a reducing coupler and go into the compression fitting with the size of pipe that was intended for it.

The problem for me with them is when I open the pack up with my clumsy hands all the bits scatter off in every direction so I spend 10 minutes looking for them.

Plenty of jet lube on em, I usually put them in a 22 ballofix when I'm reducing down
