Discuss Re-soldering a previously soldered joint in the DIY Plumbing Forum area at PlumbersForums.net

I'm putting a new yorkshire fitting on the end of a pipe from which an old fitting has been removed. Do I need to remove all traces of old solder from the pipe end before applying the new fitting, or is it sufficient just to clean up the old solder coating in the same way as I would a 'bare' pipe?

Thanks

How old was the last joint I only ask as we’ve switched to unleaded solder now as previously it was leaded (under 20 years your fine)

If it was leaded best to clean all the solder off but if it was under 20 just clean enough to get the fitting on etc or heat up the solder and wipe it off with a rag be careful as molten solder hurts

It's definitely less than 20 years old, so I will heat and wipe as you suggest then clean as needed for the new fitting.

Many thanks 👍
